¡ Bienvenidos Colorado Hispanic Bar Association Members!

As your new President, I thank you for your commitment to this special organization. I also thank my predecessor, Meshach Rhoades, for her amazing work last year. My gratitude as well to our Executive Committee, our Board Members, and our committees. We are especially indebted to our many benefactors, without whose generosity the CHBA could never hope to achieve its nonpartisan mission.

It's a new decade! This decade brings new opportunities and, undoubtedly, new challenges and changes to our profession and our community. The CHBA will meet them by continuing our public policy, community service, business development, and other work. However, I want to focus this year on three goals.

First, I want to increase our efforts to bring more Hispanics into the legal profession. Thus, I will ask our Board to supplement the scholarship endowments we established in 2007 at CU and DU, so that we can soon provide meaningful scholarships to Colorado's Hispanic law students. I will also ask for redoubled mentoring and tutoring for Hispanic law students and graduates studying for the bar.

Second, I want to increase fundraising. The CHBA has grown in numbers, stature, and influence. However, to achieve parity with states boasting more Latino attorneys, we need more resources. Thus, I am establishing a fundraising committee to pursue creative new fundraising initiatives to take the CHBA to a new level of excellence.

Finally, as Carlos Sandoval, our Banquet keynote speaker, reminded us, Latinos still face racism and discrimination — sometimes subtle, sometimes blatant. We will respond appropriately to such instances, because though we've come far, we have far to go.

In closing, I want to emphasize that this is your association. I encourage you to get involved with CHBA by joining a committee and letting us—your leaders—know your thoughts and opinions. My door is always open, as are my eyes and ears. Thank you again for your commitment and attention. I wish you all suerte buena in 2010!
